Former Official of Chung Chou University of Science and Technology Sentenced to 3.5 Years in Student Exploitation Case

In the case involving Chung Chou University of Science and Technology (now closed) luring Ugandan students to Taiwan for labor exploitation, the second-instance court in Taichung today sentenced former dean Chai Fang-wu to 3 years and 6 months in prison, overturning the previous 5-year-and-6-month sentence. The ruling can be appealed. According to the indictment, in 2019, Chai and others recruited students in Uganda by promising scholarships and internship income. However, they concealed the actual costs and forced the students into labor. 16 students were forced into overtime and night work to pay off debts. The case was exposed in January 2022. In the first trial, Chai was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months, Lan to 5 years, and Chen to 2 years.
