A Vietnamese woman surnamed Nguyen gave birth to a baby girl at the end of January this year, but the infant died of unknown causes more than 10 days later. The woman instigated a friend to bury the infant's body in a vacant lot. The Changhua District Court sentenced the woman to 5 months in prison for instigating the abandonment of a corpse, and the friend to 4 months in prison for abandoning a corpse. According to the indictment from the Changhua District Prosecutors Office, the woman was raising the child alone when the infant died in February. As an undocumented worker, she was in financial distress and could not afford funeral expenses, so she asked her friend to bury the body. When police apprehended the woman in March for being an undocumented worker, they asked about the child's whereabouts, and she confessed to the burial. The court considered that both had no prior criminal records and confessed, granting the friend a two-year suspended sentence. The verdict can be appealed.
