(Central News Agency, reporter Chen Yu-ting, Taipei, June 3) A video clip of Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an failing to name the 'Four Beasts Mountains' during a 2023 city council Q&A session has recently sparked heated discussion on social media. On June 3, Chiang said he should indeed find time to go hiking with his wife and children, and recommended that visitors to Taipei take the 'Taipei Grand Trail.'
During a 2023 policy report and Q&A session at the Taipei City Council, Democratic Progressive Party councilor Chang Wen-chieh asked Chiang, 'What are the four mountain systems that make up the Four Beasts Mountains?' Chiang was unable to answer immediately, first saying 'Councilor, please,' then mentioning he had passed by while inspecting the Taipei Metro Xinyi Line eastern extension project, before finally looking at a screen on his desk and answering, 'Elephant Mountain, Tiger Mountain, Leopard Mountain, Lion Mountain.'
Before attending the unveiling ceremony of 'Havel's Bench' on June 3, Chiang was asked by the media about the incident. He said, 'Yesterday, my wife teased me, saying I've been too busy lately to take the kids hiking. I also think I should find time to go hiking with my wife and kids.'
Chiang noted that Taipei's mountains are very close to the city, and many hiking trails are accessible by public transportation. Therefore, the city government continues to promote the 'Taipei Grand Trail' to market the city, recommending that tourists and foreign guests take the grand trail when visiting.
