37th Anniversary of June 4: UK Media ITN Releases Secretly Filmed Footage of Tiananmen Incident, Reconstructing History [Video]

On the 37th anniversary of the June 4 incident in China, British media outlet Independent Television News (ITN), through its video archive division, has recently released a piece of historical footage from the Tiananmen incident. The footage was secretly filmed by its Beijing correspondent after the event, capturing scenes of troops heavily deployed across Beijing streets. All content was recorded covertly, making it exceptionally valuable.

Independent Television News is a British news production company, and its video archive is one of the largest historical film collections in the world.

The footage runs for approximately one and a half hours and includes images of students standing on tanks, streets damaged by military clearance operations, and interviews with students expressing shock at the violence and calling for international support. It also documents Hong Kong civilians showing solidarity through supplies and banners. Additionally, the footage captures civilians attempting to resume daily life in the aftermath of the incident.

In 2014, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) also re-released its original news coverage of the event. The BBC footage chronicles the military’s forced dispersal of protesters from June 3 onward, including scenes of fire and chaos on the square, resulting in over 2,000 casualties. This has brought the historical episode back into global public view.

The June 4 incident refers to the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations led primarily by students across multiple Chinese cities, centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square—hence also known as the Tiananmen Incident. Protesters demanded political reform and greater freedoms from the Communist Party government but were ultimately suppressed by military force.
