World Cup Approaches: Vancouver Airport Deploys New Tech to Welcome 2.7 Million Passengers

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, Vancouver International Airport is already brimming with soccer fever. Eye-catching welcome signs adorn the airport's exterior, while FIFA logos, soccer balls, and merchandise are displayed throughout the terminal.

Andy Margolis, Chief Operating Officer of Vancouver International Airport, stated that preparations for this major sporting event began four years ago. During the tournament, the airport expects to welcome approximately 2.7 million passengers, averaging about 88,000 per day—an increase of 5% to 10% compared to the same period in 2025. In 2025, the airport set a record with 26.9 million annual passengers.

Margolis said the airport has introduced two new technologies to streamline processes. The first is the latest CT scanning technology, which allows passengers to pass through security without removing laptops, tablets, or liquids, significantly improving flow. Vancouver Airport is the first in Canada to adopt this advanced equipment.

The second is the installation of biometric devices at 42 boarding gates, enabling passengers to board quickly using facial recognition without needing to show a boarding pass or passport.

The airport houses a FIFA 24/7 coordination desk to provide real-time support for players, officials, media, and other accredited travelers. It is also working closely with partners such as the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to significantly enhance security measures and staffing during the event.

Jackie Tse, Airport Operations Manager for the Canada Border Services Agency, reminded international travelers that holding a World Cup ticket does not guarantee entry into Canada; passengers must still meet all entry requirements.

To make travelers from around the world feel welcome, 240 volunteers are providing various services in the terminal. The airport has also expanded its translation support to offer services in nearly 170 languages.

Vancouver International Airport has long been recognized as a top performer among world airports. In the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards, it was again named the best in North America for the 15th time in 17 years, and it was also ranked the 10th best airport globally in 2026.

The airport features a dedicated World Cup pop-up store with a wide array of team merchandise, and many duty-free shops have created special soccer zones. There is also a soccer shooting game area where passengers can wear a VR headset, step onto a virtual pitch, and test their skills against superstars like Messi and Ronaldo.

Highlighting Indigenous culture, the airport is hosting a series of Indigenous song, dance, and food festivals, allowing international visitors to experience the warmth of Canada's Indigenous peoples. Inez Cook, a member of the Métis Nation, expressed her delight that Vancouver is a host city, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to introduce her land and culture to the world.

The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Seven matches will be played in Vancouver.
