(CNA, Taipei, June 6) A man surnamed Chen was stopped by police on June 4 in Taipei's Nangang District for riding a motorcycle erratically. A man surnamed Wen was arrested on June 5 in Taipei's Shilin District after crashing a cement truck into multiple vehicles. Both tested positive for amphetamines. The Shilin District Prosecutors Office requested and obtained preventive detention orders from the court on the evening of June 5.

According to the investigation, Chen was stopped by police at around 9 a.m. on June 4 in Nangang District while riding a heavy motorcycle due to unstable driving. Wen was arrested at around 3 p.m. on June 5 in Shilin District after crashing his cement truck into several vehicles. Both underwent rapid saliva drug tests, which showed positive reactions for amphetamine, a Category 2 narcotic. They were transferred to the Shilin District Prosecutors Office after police questioning.

Following interrogation, prosecutors determined that Chen and Wen were suspected of violating Article 185-3, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 4 of the Criminal Code (driving a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs). Due to the high risk of repeating the same crime, the prosecutors requested preventive detention from the Shilin District Court on the evening of June 5, which was granted.

The Shilin District Prosecutors Office stated that drug-impaired driving is like a moving time bomb, posing a major threat to the lives, bodies, and property of road users and seriously endangering public safety. The office will implement the 'zero tolerance for drug-impaired driving' policy of the Ministry of Justice and the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office, conducting swift investigations and strict accountability for such illegal acts, and actively using compulsory measures such as preventive detention to prevent recidivism, demonstrating a firm commitment to maintaining traffic order and protecting public safety.
