(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 10, Combined Foreign Reports) The website of Euronews published an exclusive interview with Taiwan's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wu Jyh-jong, today. In the interview, he stated that while Taiwan may seem distant to most Europeans, if China were to take control of Taiwan, it would harm global interests.

The interview, published on Euronews Next, quoted Wu warning: "If China attacks Taiwan, France, Europe, the United States, and Japan will all be affected. Taiwan will be in a terrible situation, and so will you."

He emphasized Taiwan's importance to the global economy, stating that "about 70% of semiconductors, 95% of the most advanced chips, and 100% of chips used for artificial intelligence are manufactured in Taiwan," and noted that a large number of container ships transit the Taiwan Strait.

"Can you imagine how global interests would be damaged if China attacked Taiwan, or even imposed a blockade around Taiwan?" Wu said.

Wu further stated that stability in the region is a "global responsibility."

He also believes that as Taiwan's appeal to international partners grows, China's anxiety increases. "China feels it is losing Taiwan, so it is doing everything it can to try to seize it," Wu said.

Wu mentioned: "I believe Europeans are beginning to realize that we cannot let China choose our friends for us. Europe certainly has the right to choose its own friends, and choosing friends does not necessarily mean formal diplomatic relations."

Wu admitted that building relations with Europe is very difficult, saying, "China is doing everything it can to block us."

He added: "Taiwan and Europe have increasing opportunities to discuss things discreetly... We can come up with various models to try to cooperate."

Wu emphasized that Taiwan has its own military and foreign policy and "does not need to declare independence."

He also pointed out, "We are forced to maintain a very difficult balance: on one hand, we must defend our democracy and way of life, and on the other, we must not provoke China excessively."

However, Wu is not asking Europe to fight for Taiwan, but merely to build friendship. (Editor: Chen Yanjun) 1150610
