Taiwan to Tighten Chip Exports to China? Ministry: Continued Communication with US on Transshipment Violations

(Central News Agency, Reporter Lai Yu-chen, Taipei, 11th) Following foreign media reports that Taiwan plans to strengthen controls on high-end chip exports to China, Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Chin-tsang said today that as the US has strengthened export controls on advanced chips and semiconductor equipment in recent years, the government will also continue to communicate with the US on the issue of illegal transshipment of chips or related semiconductor products, implementing mutual export control goals through close consultation.

Bloomberg recently reported, citing sources, that Taiwan is considering stricter export controls on the sale of artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China to align with US measures.

Executive Yuan Spokesperson Lee Hui-chih, responding to media questions at a press conference after the Executive Yuan meeting today, pointed out that regarding the control of smuggled chips, the government's stance is to continue strengthening Taiwan's strategic high-tech goods management mechanism, aligning with international export control trends while ensuring national security.

Lee stated that the US is Taiwan's most important partner, and Taiwan will communicate and liaise with the US on the issue of illegal transshipment of high-tech goods under the existing mechanism to achieve mutual export control goals.

Ho added at the press conference that the US has strengthened export controls on advanced chips and semiconductor equipment in recent years based on US export control regulations. Taiwan and the US are close trade partners, and both sides place great importance on the issue of illegal transshipment. Regarding these chips or related semiconductor products, Taiwan and the US will continue to communicate and implement mutual export control goals through close consultation.
