President Nominates Chen Yongxing as Control Yuan President, Wang Rongzhang as Vice President, Aiming for a 'People's Control Yuan'

(Central News Agency, Taipei, 11th) Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim announced today that President Lai Ching-te will nominate former Taiwan Association for Human Rights President Chen Yongxing as President of the Control Yuan, and incumbent Control Yuan member Wang Rongzhang as Vice President. Additionally, 27 others, including Liao Wan-ju, Chairperson of the Pingtung Urban-Rural Development Culture and Education Foundation, were nominated as Control Yuan members, with the aim of building a 'People's Control Yuan.'

According to the Additional Articles of the Constitution, the Control Yuan shall have 29 members, one of whom shall be the President and one the Vice President, with a term of six years. They are nominated by the President and appointed with the consent of the Legislative Yuan.

The term of the current Control Yuan members will expire on July 31st of this year. According to regulations, the new members should assume office on August 1st. Vice President Hsiao presided over the 'Introduction Press Conference for the Nominees for President, Vice President, and Members of the 7th Control Yuan' this morning.

Vice President Hsiao stated that President Lai hopes to build a 'People's Control Yuan' with three considerations: first, breadth in professional fields to fully utilize oversight capabilities; second, warmth in human rights protection to care for the rights of vulnerable groups; and third, depth in local connections to actively listen to the needs of the people.

The list of 27 other Control Yuan nominees includes: Kao Tien-hui (Eleng Tjaljimaraw), Lecturer at Yu-Shan Theological College of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan; Chang Feng-yi, CEO of the Taiwan Labor and Social Policy Research Association; Lin Hui-fang, Secretary-General of the Republic of China Parents' Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities; Sun Yi-hsin, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Social Welfare Alliance; Li Li-fen, Vice Chairperson of the Taiwan Association for the Promotion of Children's Rights; Attorney Peng Shao-chin; Liao Wan-ju, Chairperson of the Pingtung Urban-Rural Development Culture and Education Foundation; and Lin Li-ying, Chief Clerk of the Supreme Prosecutors Office.

Also nominated are: Hou Ting-chang, Judge and Chief Judge of the Taiwan High Court; Lee Kuang-chang, Deputy Executive Director of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy; Professor Chiu Chun-yen from the Department of Law at Chinese Culture University; Hsu Kuang-jung, recipient of the Taiwan Environmental Protection Lifetime Achievement Award; former Minister of Health and Welfare Chiu Tai-yuan; Attorney Chuang Sheng-jung; Wu Tzu-sheng, Vice Chairperson of the Taiwan Bar Association; and Wang Chih-cheng, former Deputy Secretary-General of the National Cultural Association.

Other nominees include Iban Nokan, who has long been involved in promoting historical justice and rights for indigenous peoples; former New Taipei City Deputy Mayor Hsieh Cheng-ta; Associate Professor Lin Chia-fan from National Taiwan Normal University; Hsu Yu-wei, Full-time Member of the Committee for the Disposal of Improper Party Assets; and Tainan City Deputy Mayor Chao Ching-hui.

Incumbent Control Yuan members Chang Chu-fang, Chen Ching-chun, Yeh Yi-chin, Lin Wen-cheng, Lai Ding-ming, and Lai Chen-chang were also nominated. (Editor: Hsieh Chia-chen) 1150611
