(CNA reporter Lu Yan-ci, Taipei, June 17) - The corporate income tax filing season has concluded. According to the Ministry of Finance's preliminary statistics on business and industrial income tax (B&I tax) settlement declarations, enterprises under the jurisdiction of the Northern Area Taxation Bureau paid over NT$368.59 billion in self-declared taxes, maintaining the highest total among the five regional tax offices. Cross-referencing corporate financial reports, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has retained its title as the top taxpayer, contributing nearly NT$200 billion in B&I tax to the national treasury.
The 2025 comprehensive income tax filing deadline was June 1. The Ministry of Finance's preliminary data shows that nationwide B&I tax self-payment revenue (excluding provisional payments) reached NT$707.91 billion, a year-on-year increase of 21.33%. Additionally, self-paid taxes from undistributed earnings declarations totaled NT$64.54 billion, up 49.71% from the previous year.
Among the five regional tax offices, those in Taipei, Kaohsiung, and the Northern Area reported year-on-year growth in self-paid B&I tax revenue, while the Central and Southern Area offices saw declines.
The Northern Area Taxation Bureau, covering New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, and Hsinchu County and City, hosts numerous well-known listed companies and major technology firms. This concentration helped the region achieve the highest B&I tax self-payment revenue at approximately NT$368.59 billion, a 28.76% increase from the previous year.
The Taipei Taxation Bureau recorded NT$220.93 billion in self-paid B&I tax, up 28.50% year-on-year. Kaohsiung reported NT$36.83 billion, a marginal 0.01% increase. The Central Area Taxation Bureau reported NT$58.51 billion, down 6.63%, while the Southern Area recorded NT$23.04 billion, a 10.54% decrease.
Based on cross-analysis of corporate financial reports, TSMC, often referred to as Taiwan's 'national guardian mountain,' is estimated to have once again topped the taxpayer list with nearly NT$200 billion in self-paid tax, representing over 50% year-on-year growth.
Second and third-place taxpayers are estimated to have self-paid amounts below NT$20 billion. Major tech firms such as Hon Hai (Foxconn) and AI server leader Quanta Computer are expected to rank within the top ten. The tax authorities emphasized that, due to confidentiality obligations under tax law, they cannot disclose the identities of major taxpayers. (Edited by Lin Shu-yuan) 20250617
