(Central News Agency, reporter Ye Zhen, Taoyuan, June 18) Construction and land leveling for the National Freeway No. 1 Extension Project near the Rainbow Bridge in Taoyuan City's Zhuvai Fishing Port have affected egrets during their breeding season, causing chicks and eggs to fall from their nests. The Taoyuan City Government's Department of Agriculture, along with the Taoyuan City Bird Watching Society, rushed to the scene for rescue operations. Currently, 26 chicks are being cared for in a sanctuary.

The Taoyuan City Department of Agriculture stated today that after receiving a report on the 16th, they immediately activated the wildlife rescue and inter-agency coordination mechanism. In addition to notifying the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture as a first step, the Taoyuan City Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, together with the Taoyuan City Bird Watching Society, went to the site to handle the situation.

The Department of Agriculture indicated that after the rescue, the 26 chicks are currently housed at the Taoyuan City Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center located in Bade Grand Forest Park. They are under continuous care and health monitoring by professional staff. Once the chicks grow successfully and possess the ability to survive in the wild, they will be released back into their natural habitat in a suitable location.

The Department of Agriculture stated that the promotion of public works should take ecological conservation into account. Subsequently, in accordance with the "Wildlife Conservation Act," the construction unit will be notified to explain the situation to the city government. Currently, following coordination, the construction unit has promised to temporarily suspend operations in the construction area until the chicks have left their nests and professional conservation groups have confirmed the ecological conditions on-site before resuming work.
