Key News on US-Iran War
(Central News Agency, Washington, June 18) After the United States and Iran signed a memorandum to end the Middle East war, US Vice President JD Vance stated that the subsequent 60-day negotiation period between the two sides begins today. Vance also said he plans to travel to Switzerland, though the specific date is not yet confirmed, but technical negotiations between the two sides on Iran's nuclear program are expected to begin over the weekend.
US President Donald Trump signed a 14-point memorandum with Iran on the 17th, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also completed the signing digitally. Media reports indicate that the formal signing ceremony between the US and Iran, originally scheduled for the 19th in Switzerland, will be canceled, and nuclear negotiations will commence directly.
Responding to media inquiries at a White House press conference today, Vance stated that he plans to travel to Switzerland to attend talks with Iran, but the specific timing is not yet confirmed. "We expect these technical negotiations to start sometime over the weekend; this is still in the plan, but it could change."
Vance pointed out that he plans to lead the US negotiation team and speculated that the talks should occur over the weekend, but this depends on when the Iranian negotiators can arrive in Switzerland.
According to the memorandum signed by the US and Iran, the United States and Iran commit to negotiating and reaching a final agreement within 60 days (extendable with mutual consent). Vance stated that the 60-day negotiation period begins today.
When asked if the final agreement would include restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program, Vance responded that the US expects that as part of the final agreement, Iran will not be able to develop missiles that pose a broad threat to the entire world. "You can't tell a country, whether it's Israel or Iran, that they are not allowed to have any self-defense rights. That is not President (Trump's) request."
Vance emphasized that as part of the final agreement, "what we hope to see is Iran no longer funding regional instability, no longer funding regional terrorism."
Foreign media reported that Iranian President Pezeshkian stated earlier today that the "historic" agreement reached between Iran and the United States will pave the way for ending the war and promoting a final peace agreement. However, Tehran also emphasized that future negotiations with Washington will not touch upon Iran's missile program. (Editor: Yang Zhaoyan) 0619
