Army Captain Indicted for Publicly Insulting Dual-National Conscript; Prosecutors Seek Sentence Enhancement

Yilan District Prosecutors Office announced the indictment of a Captain surnamed Wen for public insult following an incident at the Jinliujie military camp in Yilan this April. Prosecutors stated that Wen abused his authority to verbally abuse a dual-national Taiwanese-Japanese conscript. Given the nature of the offense, the prosecution has requested that the court impose a heavier sentence.

Investigations revealed that Captain Wen repeatedly used discriminatory and derogatory language against the conscript in April, including slurs such as "Japanese devil" and insults targeting the soldier's family. He also claimed the conscript was "atoning for sins" by serving in Taiwan. The prosecution emphasized that as a superior officer, Wen failed to lead by example and instead utilized his position to perpetrate verbal violence.

Following the incident, the Army confirmed on May 9 that Captain Wen was removed from his post and barred from future military service for three years, effective May 6, citing leadership failure and misconduct. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding professional standards and organizational culture within military units.
