Taipei, June 20 (CNA) CTBC Brothers pitcher Xu Jilin, 26, was fired by the team for drunk driving. The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) announced its disciplinary action today, suspending him for 40 games and fining him NT$440,000 in accordance with league regulations.
CTBC Brothers issued a statement last night stating that Xu Jilin was involved in a drunk driving accident last September, which seriously endangered public safety. He also concealed the incident from the team afterward. The team announced that, in accordance with CPBL regulations and his player contract, Xu Jilin was immediately terminated and his contract was voided, with the team reserving the right to seek damages for the material breach of contract.
The CPBL issued a statement today, saying that although the player has been dismissed by his team, "based on relevant precedents, the league will still impose disciplinary action according to regulations. He will be penalized for violating drunk driving rules and engaging in improper conduct, with the maximum penalty of a 40-game suspension and a fine of NT$440,000."
In 2021, the CPBL league committee passed regulations for penalties related to violations of drunk driving laws. Penalties vary based on blood alcohol content, ranging from a 10-game suspension and a fine of NT$120,000 to a maximum of a 40-game suspension and a fine of NT$480,000, with the possibility of increased penalties depending on the circumstances.
