TAICHUNG, Taiwan (CNA) -- The Taichung City Government is promoting a policy of sharing public sector parking lots. The City Government's Transportation Bureau announced today that it has successfully activated nearly 2,000 parking spaces. For example, at the Southern District Joint Office Building, the utilization rate for monthly night passes has reached 97%, effectively alleviating parking demand in the surrounding area.

Ye Zhaofu, Director of the Taichung City Transportation Bureau, explained in a press release that the Transportation Bureau launched a pilot program for shared parking spaces starting in June 2024, opening them up for citizens to use during nighttime and non-working hours. The first phase opened 22 shared locations, providing 1,310 shared parking spaces. Between 2025 and 2026, an additional 5 locations and 514 spaces will be added, bringing the total number of shared parking spaces in the city to 1,824.

Ye Zhaofu stated that nearly 2,000 parking spaces have been activated, equivalent to the supply of 4 additional parking lots, saving approximately NT$2 billion in parking lot construction costs and maximizing the efficiency of limited space. To ensure fairness and meet the needs of citizens visiting government offices, agencies will only reserve necessary official vehicle parking spaces, with the remaining areas available for citizens to park.

Taking the underground parking lot of the Southern District Joint Office Building as an example, Li Meili, Director of the Southern District Office, explained that the underground parking lot has a total of 65 parking spaces, of which 59 are general parking spaces, and 6 are designated for families, the disabled, and electric vehicles.

Li Meili said that since the shared parking was opened in November 2024, it has been managed by a professional contractor commissioned by the Transportation Bureau. Among these, 39 parking spaces are available for monthly night passes, and 38 have been sold so far, with a utilization rate of 97%. The remaining 26 parking spaces are available for public use and temporary parking during working hours, balancing the parking needs of citizens and their official business.

Li Meili pointed out that the monthly rent for shared parking spaces starts at NT$900. The usage hours are from 6 PM on weekdays to 8 AM the following morning, and full-day parking is available on holidays and weekends. This translates to approximately 500 hours of use per month, averaging only about NT$1.8 per hour, which is very attractive to residents in the surrounding area. This not only effectively increases parking space turnover and utilization rates but also reduces illegal parking in residential areas, achieving a win-win effect of revitalizing public assets and relieving parking pressure.
