(Central News Agency Los Angeles, 21st, Comprehensive Foreign News) Children today may prefer 3C devices over toys, but the charm of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie remains. Industry preliminary data shows that "Toy Story 5," starring these three characters, grossed $160 million over the weekend, marking the best opening performance of the year and topping the North American box office.
According to reports from American entertainment news media "Variety" and Agence France-Presse, in terms of overseas markets, "Toy Story 5" also achieved a strong performance with $152 million, bringing its global total box office revenue to $312 million. The film's production cost was $250 million, and this figure does not include global promotional and marketing expenses.
David A. Gross, an industry analyst at Franchise Entertainment Research, said, "This is a golden period for audiences to bring their families to the cinema, and 'Toy Story' completely meets market expectations."
He stated that "Toy Story 5" is not only another excellent opening performance for a Pixar franchise but also the best opening performance in the history of the "Toy Story" series, approximately 37% higher than "Toy Story 4."
Gross believes that "Toy Story 5" is expected to become the second-largest animated film opening box office in film history, second only to Pixar's "Incredibles 2," distributed by Disney, which grossed $182.7 million in the US and Canada in June 2018.
Gross added, "Since the end of the pandemic in 2023, the trend of family viewing has become a driving force for industry recovery. The success of such films largely comes from sequels, live-action adaptations, and hybrid live-action/animated works."
The North American exhibitor relations tracker, Exhibitor Relations, reported that ranking second was Stephen Spielberg's sci-fi thriller "Disclosure Day," which grossed approximately $17 million, bringing its cumulative box office revenue to $78.2 million since its opening last weekend.
Ranking third was the horror film "Obsession," which grossed another $14 million in its sixth week of release, with a cumulative North American box office of $215.8 million.
The thriller "Backrooms," distributed by A24, remained steady at fourth place with a box office of $7.3 million, accumulating $175 million in North America over four weeks of release.
Ranking fifth was the latest installment in the parody series, "Scary Movie 6," which grossed $6.7 million in its third week of release.
The top 10 films at the box office this week, in order, are: "Masters of the Universe," $5.6 million; "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu," $3.9 million; "Leviticus" (tentative translation), $2.7 million; "The Death of Robin Hood" (tentative translation), $2.6 million; and "Michael," $2.2 million.
