(Central News Agency reporter Xie Junlin, Taipei, June 22) Gang leader Lai was attacked and had his Achilles tendon severed in a Ximending parking lot in Taipei last December. The suspects, Xu and Wang, immediately called to surrender. The Taipei District Court today sentenced both men to 3 years and 2 months, and 2 years and 8 months in prison respectively for attempted serious injury. Appeals are possible.

Police investigation revealed that Xu is the godson of the deceased Gao, the "Godfather of Southern Wanhua" of a certain gang. He did not know Lai, but believed that Lai was responsible for Gao being beaten and becoming lame in the past.

On the afternoon of December 1st last year, after Gao's memorial service, Xu, in collusion with Wang, ambushed Lai in a parking lot on Zhonghua Road, Wanhua District, Taipei City. Wang first sprayed Lai with chili water and held him down with his bare hands, while Xu used a cleaver to slash Lai's legs. Seeing that their objective was achieved, Xu and Wang immediately surrendered to the police and notified an ambulance. Police arrived at the scene, arrested the two men, and transferred them to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office. After interrogation, the prosecutor applied for their detention and prohibition of communication, which was approved.

Lai was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment and diagnosed with open fractures of the right ankle and talus, complete tears of the Achilles tendon and the long and short peroneal tendons, and muscle tears in the lower leg. Due to medical treatment, the injuries have not yet resulted in the destruction of the lower limbs or serious impairment of function, which would constitute serious injury.

The Taipei District Prosecutors Office concluded its investigation in January of this year, determining that Xu sought out Wang to commit the crime to avenge his godfather, and indicted both men on charges of attempted serious injury under the Penal Code. The two men were then transferred to the Taipei District Court for trial.

The Taipei District Court announced its first-instance verdict today, sentencing Xu to 3 years and 2 months in prison and Wang to 2 years and 8 months in prison for attempted serious injury. The court has not yet explained the criminal facts and sentencing reasons for the verdict. (Editor: Chen Qingfang) 1150622
