(CNA, reporter Hao Hsueh-ching, Taichung, June 22) In an era of declining birth rates, Kuan Hsiang-pin, director of obstetrics and gynecology at Chung Kang Branch of Show Chwan Memorial Hospital in Taichung, said today that a 36-year-old mother of 8 is pregnant with her 9th child, setting a record for the most natural births by a single woman in his medical career. He stated that he will accompany the expectant mother in safely welcoming her new life.
Kuan Hsiang-pin said that this pregnant woman loves children very much and has already given birth to 8. He has been providing prenatal check-ups and deliveries since her second pregnancy. Now, pregnant with her 9th child, she told him during a prenatal check-up that she hoped this pregnancy would be twins. When the ultrasound revealed it was a single baby, she said she would continue to try, setting a record for the most natural births by a single woman in his medical career.
Kuan Hsiang-pin recalled that four weeks after she became pregnant with her 9th child, before her first outpatient appointment, she sent him a LINE message saying, "The 'Eight Treasures Congee' (referring to her children) has grown up. Now I have to take care of a little one again. We've come to see you again, Dr. Kuan. I hope to have twins this time."
When Kuan Hsiang-pin curiously asked the pregnant woman why she loved children so much, she replied that she and her husband will grow old one day, and if they have fewer children, it will be very difficult for them to be cared for. Having more children brings more happiness, and as the children grow up, they can rely on and help each other. Her eldest daughter is now 16 years old and takes care of her younger siblings like a little mother. She gave birth to her eldest daughter at the age of 20 and had a child every two years. She currently has 4 sons and 4 daughters, and her home is always filled with liveliness and happiness. Each child is a precious gift from heaven.
Since her second pregnancy, this expectant mother has been under Kuan Hsiang-pin's care for prenatal check-ups and deliveries. During the Lunar New Year this year, she brought her 8 children to the hospital to wish Kuan Hsiang-pin a Happy New Year. The then 2-year-old "Eight Treasures Congee" repeatedly wished Kuan Hsiang-pin a Happy New Year.
Kuan Hsiang-pin stated that multiple pregnancies are still considered a higher-risk group in medicine, potentially increasing risks such as gestational hypertension, postpartum hemorrhage, and poor uterine contraction. Therefore, regular prenatal check-ups and comprehensive prenatal care are crucial.
Kuan Hsiang-pin said that the pregnant woman is currently four months pregnant, with an estimated due date in December. Examinations revealed that her health condition is good, with no problems found. Coupled with continuous monitoring and care from the medical team, the seven children she has delivered under his care so far were all successfully delivered naturally.
Kuan Hsiang-pin emphasized that he respects the different family planning choices of each family. The most important aspects are maternal and infant health and comprehensive care. Whether it is the first pregnancy or a multiple pregnancy, expectant mothers should prioritize pregnancy health management, including regular prenatal check-ups, balanced nutrition, adequate rest, and risk assessment. With the companionship of a professional medical team, they can safely welcome new life. (Editor: Lin Shu-hui) 1150622
