According to statistics from the Taiwan Area National Freeway Bureau (TANFB), the daily average traffic volume on national highways during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday was 109.5 million vehicle-kilometers (MVK), 1.2 times the typical daily volume, with an average congestion rate of 1.1%, down from the previous year.
The TANFB reported that daily two-way traffic ranged from 106.6 to 111.6 MVK. Peak southbound traffic occurred on the first day at 61.4 MVK, while peak northbound traffic reached 61.0 MVK on the third day. The total two-way peak of 111.6 MVK on the first day was approximately 1.2 times the annual daily average.
Regarding National Freeway 5, the daily average throughput at the Hsuehshan Tunnel was 70,000 vehicles, 1.2 times the annual average. While traffic patterns remained similar to the previous year, northbound traffic on the final day faced delays due to bus breakdowns and multi-vehicle accidents, with congestion lasting until late at night.
The daily congestion rate—defined as the ratio of segments and time intervals where speeds drop below 40 km/h—ranged from 0.4% to 1.8%, averaging 1.1%. This represents a 26.7% improvement compared to the 1.5% average recorded during the same period last year.
The TANFB collaborated with the Directorate General of Highways to establish a joint transportation coordination center for real-time monitoring and incident response. Efforts were also made to integrate traffic information, including public transport promotions and bypass routes for provincial highways, to enhance overall traffic flow efficiency.
