Nantou Environmental Protection Bureau Rejects Puli Waste Landfill Project

Central News Agency (CNA) reported on June 22 in Nantou County: A private developer’s plan to construct an industrial waste landfill in Puli Township has been rejected by the Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau. The project faced strong local opposition and failed to comply with previous administrative requirements, specifically the mandate to hold public information sessions and provide supplementary documentation.

Yunjie Corporation proposed a 24.6-hectare waste landfill in Qilin Village, Puli. Following an initial review on January 4, authorities required the developer to address feedback and hold at least three public hearings by March 15. The developer failed to meet these deadlines.

During an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) committee meeting today, the Bureau concluded that since the developer neither submitted the required revisions nor conducted public hearings, the application must be rejected under Article 13-1 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Act.

Local representatives, including legislators Su Yu-cheng and Chen Yi-chun, welcomed the decision, citing concerns over water source protection, geological risks, and potential negative impacts on downstream agricultural industries, such as the local water bamboo cultivation. The opposition coalition remains vigilant, asserting that the project is fundamentally unsuitable and demanding that future land use remain strictly protected.
