(CNA Taipei, 23rd) The Taiwan stock market opened higher today but closed lower, falling 640.86 points to 47100.65 points, a decrease of 1.34%, with a transaction value of NT$1.600856 trillion.

The weighted index opened at 47795.09 points, reaching a high of 48218.87 points and a low of 47100.65 points during the session; the index excluding financial stocks was 42348.85 points, down 637.48 points.

Percentage changes for the eight major stock categories: Cement and ceramics stocks fell 4%, food stocks rose 0.72%, petrochemical stocks fell 1.49%, textile stocks fell 0.43%, machinery and electrical stocks fell 1.53%, paper stocks fell 3.13%, construction stocks fell 0.07%, and financial stocks rose 0.36%.

Buy orders were 25,422,303 shares, sell orders were 20,646,528 shares, and transaction volume was 16,441,088 shares.

At the close, 247 stocks advanced, 773 declined, and 84 remained unchanged.

The top 5 stocks by transaction volume were AU Optronics, Innolux, UMC, Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing, and Top Union 50.

The top 5 stocks by gain were Arise, China Fortune, G-King, J-Power, and Eagletac.
