(CNA, Reporter Chang Chien-chung, Hsinchu, June 23) Recently, as the water level of Wushantou Reservoir dropped, some floating solar power systems came into contact with the bottom mud. This has raised public concerns about the safety of solar modules. Solar manufacturer Yuanjing stated today that floating solar modules are safe and experiments have shown that they will not release harmful substances such as heavy metals.

Yuanjing emphasized that its solar modules are produced in accordance with strict quality standards and safety inspection procedures. To further verify the impact of the modules on the surrounding water bodies under extreme conditions, the company commissioned the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to conduct tests.

Yuanjing pointed out that the ITRI test involved breaking aged solar modules and then conducting a submersion experiment. The experimental results showed that after immersing the broken modules in water for 14 days, no heavy metals or other harmful substances were detected in the water, and it met drinking water quality standards.

Yuanjing stated that solar power generation technology is not a new technology adopted solely by Taiwan. Before the government promoted renewable energy policies, solar power was widely used globally, including in developed countries such as Europe, the United States, and Japan, and has been installed for a long time in various environments including residential rooftops, factories, farmland, water bodies, and public facilities. The safety, environmental impact, and non-toxicity of the products have all been long-term proven and strictly reviewed internationally.

Regarding floating solar power systems, Yuanjing pointed out that the design and construction of the systems must comply with relevant regulations and engineering standards. The modules themselves are mainly composed of materials such as glass, aluminum frames, encapsulation materials, and silicon solar cells, and are not materials that release toxic substances as imagined by the public.

Yuanjing stated that it understands the public's high regard for reservoir water quality and environmental safety, and agrees that any public construction and energy facilities should be subject to strict inspection and transparent supervision. The company will continue to respond to public concerns with scientific data, public information, and a responsible attitude, and will cooperate with the regulations and inspections of the competent authorities and relevant organizations.
