(CNA Montreal, June 23, 2024, International News) A shooting incident occurred at noon today in Montreal, Canada. The gunman shot and killed a civilian in a community where some Jewish residents live. Subsequently, a shootout with police who arrived at the scene resulted in the death of one officer, and the gunman was also killed by police.
According to Agence France-Presse, the incident took place in a community where some Jewish residents live, with a kosher market and restaurants in the area. However, police refused to comment on possible motives and did not state whether the incident was a hate crime or an act of terrorism.
French public broadcaster Radio-Canada reported that the gunman was linked to the misogynistic "involuntary celibate" (incel) ideology.
The perpetrator of the 2018 Toronto van attack, which was driven by similar ideology, was one of the deadliest attacks in Canada, resulting in 10 deaths.
"Involuntary celibates" refers to a group of heterosexual men who, due to their inability to find female partners, resort to extreme, retaliatory criminal actions or violent attacks.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher stated that the incident was "a tragedy, a nightmare." Police received a report of a shooting in Montreal's Cote-des-Neiges neighborhood around 11:30 AM and engaged in a shootout with the suspect, who was wearing what appeared to be military attire.
Dagher said that one male police officer was fatally shot, and another female officer was seriously injured but is not in life-threatening condition. He emphasized that the suspect's motive is not yet clear and urged caution, stating, "At this stage, we must be very cautious and not believe rumors."
Details regarding the civilian victim remain unclear at this time.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his "horror" at the violent incident.
As the shooting occurred in a Jewish community, it immediately sparked online discussions, with many suggesting it was another antisemitic violent incident in Canada.
Since the attack by the Palestinian armed group Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, and Israel's subsequent military operation in the Gaza Strip, reports of crimes targeting Jewish people in Canada have significantly increased.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a prominent Canadian Jewish advocacy group, stated that it is closely monitoring the situation. (Compiled by Chang Ming-hsuan) 1150623
