(CNA, Taipei, June 23) The Central Weather Administration issued a high temperature advisory for 14 counties and cities today, with Pingtung warned of extreme high temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius. Weather expert Wu Der-rong stated that Typhoon Mikala will turn north starting today, and due to the approaching front and moisture brought by Mikala on the 26th and 27th, intense rainfall should be anticipated.

The Central Weather Administration issued a high temperature advisory, indicating hot weather across the island. Pingtung County is under a red alert today, with a chance of continuous extreme high temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius.

Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Tainan City, and Hualien County are under an orange alert, with a chance of continuous high temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius. Keelung City, Taichung City, Chiayi County, and Kaohsiung City are under a yellow alert, with attention needed for temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius.

Wu Der-rong, an adjunct associate professor at National Central University's Department of Atmospheric Sciences, stated in the "Heavenly Secrets Revealed Classroom" column of the Weather Industry Promotion Foundation today that the latest European model simulations show the Pacific high-pressure system covering the island for the next two days. Coupled with subsidence from the outer bands of Typhoon Mikala, the weather will remain sunny and hot like midsummer across the island, with the highest temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius. Sun protection and heatstroke prevention are advised.

According to the Central Weather Administration's typhoon information, Typhoon Mikala's center was located at 18.3 degrees North latitude and 125.5 degrees East longitude at 2:00 AM today, moving northwest at 9 kilometers per hour. The central pressure is 925 millibars, with maximum sustained winds of 51 meters per second near the center, and a 7-level wind radius of 180 kilometers.

Wu Der-rong pointed out that observation data this morning shows clear skies with no clouds over Taiwan, and Mikala has a distinct typhoon eye. Moisture will increase on the 25th, and the weather will become unstable with a chance of localized brief showers, and strong convective development in the afternoon. On the 26th and 27th, with the approaching front and moisture brought by Mikala, intense rainfall should be anticipated, and temperatures will slightly decrease.

Wu Der-rong mentioned that from the 28th to the 30th, the front will retreat northward, the weather will improve, and temperatures will rise. Localized showers or thunderstorms may still occur in the afternoon. On July 1st and 2nd, the weather will be sunny to cloudy across the island, with hot daytime temperatures and occasional localized showers in the mountains in the afternoon.

Wu Der-rong stated that the latest typhoon track probability forecast map from the Central Weather Administration shows that Typhoon Mikala, located east of the Luzon Sea, will gradually turn north starting today and maintain its peak intensity. Tomorrow and on the 25th, it will move north along Taiwan's east coast, maintaining a path that will not affect Taiwan. Furthermore, the further north it goes, the lower the "ocean heat content" will be, indicating a trend of gradual weakening.

Wu Der-rong mentioned that on the 26th, Mikala will pass near the Ryukyu Islands, and on the 27th, it will accelerate northeastward and move away. Mikala will not affect Taiwan, but attention should be paid to long swells along the eastern coast. Another tropical depression is located northeast of Guam and is predicted to develop into a typhoon today, following a large looping path, further away from Taiwan with no threat of affecting the island.
