Dr. Wu Jing-jyi Honored with Special Contribution Award at 2nd Taipei Theatre Awards

The 2nd Taipei Theatre Awards will take place on July 6, featuring the presentation of the Special Contribution Award to Dr. Wu Jing-jyi, widely recognized as a key promoter of Taiwanese culture. Dr. Wu noted that any form of theatre holds potential for development as long as it fosters a connection with the audience.

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Wu emphasized the inherent freedom and diversity of theatre. Although he lacked formal professional theatre training, his entry into the field allowed him to act as an enabler for professional creators. He adopted a philosophy of support rather than competition, aiming to provide growth opportunities for theatre professionals.

According to the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs, the award recognizes Dr. Wu’s long-term contributions to the cultural and artistic environment and his influence on contemporary Taiwanese theatre.

Dr. Wu, currently a Professor Emeritus at National Chengchi University and an Honorary Chair Professor at National Sun Yat-sen University, studied educational psychology at the University of Minnesota. During his time in the U.S., he was deeply involved with the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York. After returning to Taiwan, he co-founded the Lanling Theatre Workshop with King Chieh-shih and others, and championed initiatives like the 'Super Lanling King' youth drama competition and the Paper Windmill Theatre's art projects.

Dr. Wu views theatre as a 'social prescription'—a vital medium for interpersonal connection and societal understanding. The award ceremony will be held at the Globe Playhouse of the Taipei Performing Arts Center on July 6, with live broadcasts available via CTS and online platforms.
