SEOUL, June 24 (CNA) -- A North Korean soldier has been detained by South Korean authorities after crossing the heavily fortified inter-Korean border earlier this week, in what is believed to be a defection case, Yonhap News Agency reported today.
The South Korean military's Joint Chiefs of Staff told the media that "the military discovered and detained a North Korean soldier on the central front line on Tuesday evening, and relevant agencies are currently investigating the detailed circumstances," according to Yonhap.
Since the Korean War divided the Korean Peninsula in the 1950s, tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled to South Korea. Most typically travel by land to neighboring China first, then enter a third country like Thailand before finally arriving in South Korea, according to Agence France-Presse.
Defections across the direct land border separating the two Koreas are relatively rare, as the area is densely forested, mined, and closely monitored by soldiers from both sides.
Upon arrival in South Korea, North Koreans are usually first handed over to Seoul's intelligence agencies for screening.
According to data from South Korea's Unification Ministry, more than 34,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea.
In 2024, 236 North Koreans arrived in South Korea, with women accounting for 88% of the total. (Compiled by Tsai Chia-min) min) 1150624
