WASHINGTON (CNA) - US President Trump said today that Iran has assured the US that it will not charge any fees for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Negotiations are ongoing to find a lasting solution to end the war in the Middle East.
According to AFP, Trump posted on his social media platform "Truth Social" today: "Iran has notified the United States... Iran will not charge "any transit fees, insurance fees, or any other form of fees" for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz."
However, he did not specify whether this assurance would remain in effect after the current 60-day negotiation period ends.
The Tehran authorities had previously stated on multiple occasions that they planned to charge so-called maritime service fees for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, but the United States strongly opposed this.
Iran and Oman announced yesterday that they are working on a management service fee for the Strait of Hormuz, claiming sovereignty over the waterway. (Compiled by Liu Wenyu) 1150624
