Taipei, June 24 (CNA) China's "Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress," which takes effect in July, asserts jurisdiction over overseas organizations and individuals. DPP legislative caucus whip Chuang Jui-hsiung said Tuesday that China's attempt to extend its laws globally and create self-censorship in speech will be poorly received by the international community.
China's "Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress" will be implemented starting July 1. It stipulates that organizations and individuals outside of China who engage in acts that undermine ethnic unity and progress or create ethnic division within China will be held legally accountable.
Chuang Jui-hsiung and caucus secretary-general Fan Yun held a press conference on public opinion at the Legislative Yuan. Chuang said that freedom of speech is a normal practice in democratic countries, but China is enacting laws that govern the entire world and using its domestic legislation to intimidate differing viewpoints, aiming to create self-censorship. He believes the international community will give this a very poor evaluation, questioning why any country would lack such confidence.
DPP spokesperson and legislator Lin Chu-yin posted on Facebook that this "evil law" is an attempt to extend authoritarian influence internationally, engage in global cross-border suppression, and create a chilling effect through unlimited expansion of power.
Lin Chu-yin pointed out that Taiwan will absolutely not tolerate such malicious cross-border psychological intimidation. Taiwan is working with democratic countries worldwide to establish comprehensive counter-mechanisms from three major aspects, consolidating international consensus to ensure that perpetrators of cross-border persecution receive due sanctions from the international community.
In addition, when asked by the media about a 11-minute special report on Taiwan's security produced by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), which deeply analyzed the cross-strait military balance, geopolitical factors, and global strategic significance under the theme "When Will China Attack Taiwan?"
Chuang Jui-hsiung stated that any fluctuation across the Taiwan Strait affects international nerves. When Taiwan faces a crisis, the international community feels it. China is continuously testing Taiwan through various means, including gray-zone tactics. Taiwan must strengthen its self-defense capabilities and enhance its asymmetric warfare capabilities. This is not only for Taiwan's defense but also to convey to the international community Taiwan's determination to defend itself. (Edited by Wan Shu-chang) 1150624
