(CNA Taipei, June 24) The international co-production musical "The Wedding Banquet," adapted from director Ang Lee's classic film, will return to the National Theater in Taipei in September for its final performances in Taiwan. "The Wedding Banquet" will re-examine diverse forms of love and family through a Taiwanese story and contemporary perspectives.
According to a press release issued today by the production team, Huawen Global Arts Entertainment, the musical "The Wedding Banquet" is currently continuing its market development in the United States and planning its future development in accordance with U.S. commercial theater and union systems. With the progress of international development, "The Wedding Banquet" will also become one of the few original musical works originating from Taiwan in recent years to enter the professional theater development system in the United States.
The musical "The Wedding Banquet" premiered worldwide in Taiwan in 2024 in a new version. The work, with a Taiwanese family story at its core, reinterprets themes of family, love, belonging, and cultural identity through the form of a Broadway musical.
Wei Wei Yang, a Taiwanese-American original concept creator and executive producer of "The Wedding Banquet," stated that the original intention behind the creation of "The Wedding Banquet" was to engage in a dialogue with audiences worldwide through a story from a Taiwanese family. "Family, love, and understanding are common emotions that transcend culture and language. I look forward to this musical meeting audiences in more cities in the future and allowing this story to continue to grow."
In conjunction with the 2026 performances, the musical "The Wedding Banquet" is also launching the online exhibition "Taiwan Pride," which connects the core spirit of the musical with Taiwan's ongoing dialogue on diverse relationships, family, and equality issues through digital curation, inviting people from Taiwan and overseas to participate.
The musical "The Wedding Banquet" will be performed from September 25 to September 27 at the National Theater. (Editor: Chen Ching-fang) 1150624
