(CNA reporter Yeh Su-ping, Taipei, June 24) President Lai Ching-te, who also serves as chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), said today that tomorrow will be the closest the typhoon Mikala gets to Taiwan. He asked all party officials and local service teams to assist the central and local governments in various flood prevention operations, strengthen the dissemination of the latest weather information to the public, remind fellow citizens to prepare early, remain vigilant, and make thorough preparations to jointly protect the lives and property of the people.
The DPP held its Central Standing Committee meeting today. Lai Ching-te mentioned at the meeting that according to the Central Weather Administration's forecast, although the probability of Typhoon Mikala directly hitting Taiwan is low, tomorrow will be the time it gets closest to Taiwan. Affected by the outer cloud bands, the probability of rainfall in various regions will significantly increase.
Lai Ching-te said that on June 26 and 27, due to the approaching plum rain front and the strengthening of the southwest monsoon, the weather will turn unstable. Central and southern regions, as well as mountainous areas, should pay particular attention to short-duration heavy rainfall and the possibility of localized heavy rain and torrential downpours.
He stated that in response to the continuous rainfall situation in the coming days, the Executive Yuan has instructed relevant ministries and agencies to carry out all necessary flood prevention preparations to mitigate the potential disasters brought by heavy rainfall.
