WASHINGTON (CNA) - China's coast guard and patrol vessels have recently been active in Taiwan's eastern waters, prompting the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany to express concern today, stating that these actions threaten regional stability and freedom of navigation.
According to Reuters, a spokesperson for the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) stated, "China's actions seriously undermine regional stability."
The AIT spokesperson said, "The US rejects any claims by China to interfere with freedom of navigation or overflight, freedom to lay cables, or other lawful maritime uses," adding that China's attempts to exercise jurisdiction in waters where Taiwan has peacefully managed for over 70 years will only escalate tensions and undermine the path to peaceful resolution it claims to seek.
The representative offices of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in Taiwan issued a rare joint statement expressing concern over China's related activities, stating, "These actions threaten regional stability, freedom of navigation, and the safety of international shipping. We reiterate our opposition to any unilateral changes to the status quo, especially through threats, use of force, or coercion."
The statement also pointed out, "Ensuring and respecting all navigation rights, freedoms, and the safety of seafarers and vessels is a crucial fundamental principle."
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (Compiled by Chang Ming-hsuan) 1150624
