(CNA Washington, June 25, 2024, Reuters) Following a series of strong earthquakes in Venezuela, the United States announced late today that it has been in contact with Venezuelan authorities and is mobilizing aid for the South American nation.

Reuters reported that U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau stated on social media platform X, "We are in contact with the relevant authorities and are mobilizing aid." He described the earthquake as "devastating."

Strong tremors struck west of Venezuela's capital, Caracas, this afternoon, causing multiple buildings to collapse and trapping some citizens under rubble. Scientists have warned of potential significant casualties and widespread damage across the country.

U.S. Department of State official Jeremy Lewin stated on X that the Department has mobilized its Disaster Assistance Response Team and Working Group to provide and coordinate critical assistance to the Venezuelan people.

He added, "The United States will work with our partners in the interim government of Venezuela to deploy search and rescue teams, medical and humanitarian supplies, and other resources in the critical early stages following this natural disaster tragedy."

The U.S. Embassy in Caracas reported that all U.S. personnel are safe.

Agence France-Presse reported that U.S. President Trump stated late today that following two strong earthquakes in Venezuela, the U.S. is "ready, willing, and able to help" Venezuela.

Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that the two major earthquakes experienced by the Venezuelan people were very large in magnitude and caused severe casualties.

He said, "The United States is ready, willing, and able to help! I have instructed all departments of our government to be ready to move quickly. We will extend a helping hand to our new friends. Initial reports indicate the situation is not optimistic!" (Compiled by Lu Ying-tzu) 1150625
