Taipei, June 25 (CNA) Representative offices of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in Taiwan issued a joint statement opposing any unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) also stated that China's attempts to assert administrative control over waters where peace has been managed for over 70 years are escalating tensions. The Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) China Affairs Department stated today that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait have become the common language of democratic nations. The world is increasingly clear about who is maintaining peace and who is creating trouble.
The DPP's China Affairs Department posted on Facebook that in recent days, the international community has successively sent clear signals regarding China's provocative actions around Taiwan, indicating that the international community's perception of China's threat has evolved from isolated incidents to a shared concern for the entire Indo-Pacific security order.
The DPP's China Affairs Department stated that looking at the developments over the past five years, whether it's the G7, US-Japan-South Korea summits, the European Union, NATO, the QUAD, US-Australia ministerial consultations, or bilateral summits between heads of state, "maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and opposing unilateral changes to the status quo" has become the common language of democratic nations.
The DPP's China Affairs Department said that in contrast, the Beijing authorities have continuously attempted to change the status quo through gray zone coercion in recent years. The People's Liberation Army's (PLA) aircraft and vessels frequently cross the median line of the Taiwan Strait, attempting to "internalize" the strait. Now, they are extending their reach to the waters east of Taiwan, attempting to break through the first island chain and alter the existing order.
The DPP's China Affairs Department called on the Beijing authorities to cease military intimidation and gray zone coercion and abandon any attempts to change the status quo by force. Only by respecting international law, respecting regional order, and respecting the common expectation of the people on both sides of the strait for peace can stability and prosperity truly be brought to the Indo-Pacific. This is because the world is increasingly clearly seeing who is maintaining peace and who is creating trouble. (Edited by Wan Shu-chen) 1150625
