(Central News Agency, Kuala Lumpur, June 29) Malaysia, as a major hub for the semiconductor industry in Southeast Asia, attracts global tech companies. Taiwan, through the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Contact TAIWAN platform, is proactively recruiting talent by engaging with universities. Malaysian scholars believe that Taiwan's comprehensive semiconductor and electronics industry cluster offers significant potential for future talent and industry collaboration between the two sides.
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is one of Malaysia's renowned universities, with faculties including Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Business Administration. In recent years, it has actively invested in nurturing talent in artificial intelligence (AI) and information technology, with students from related departments becoming key targets for recruitment by tech companies.
Contact TAIWAN, a national networking platform established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, visited UTAR today, leading Taiwanese companies to interact face-to-face with students. Job openings in fields such as biotechnology, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence (AI) garnered significant attention from students.
A student pursuing studies in biotechnology expressed that, in addition to the semiconductor industry, Taiwan is highly competitive in areas like biotechnology and precision manufacturing. They hope to gain cross-border work experience and exposure to different industry R&D environments by participating in campus recruitment events in Taiwan.
Another student from the Faculty of Engineering pointed out that Taiwan's complete semiconductor supply chain and manufacturing industry cluster are highly attractive to students with engineering backgrounds.
Regarding Contact TAIWAN's talent recruitment efforts, UTAR Assistant Professor Jack Ng Hon Wi told CNA that Taiwan and Malaysia have a strong foundation for collaboration in nurturing IT and AI talent. For instance, UTAR has a long-standing partnership with Phison Electronics in Taiwan and has previously collaborated with the Malaysia Chinese Research Centre to promote AI talent development, reflecting the continuous deepening of high-tech talent exchange between the two sides.
He noted that Taiwan possesses a complete and internationally competitive semiconductor and electronics industry, with a highly mature ecosystem from higher education and talent cultivation to industrial chain development. Many universities offer relevant courses, making it very appealing to Malaysian youth aspiring to enter the tech industry. There remains significant room for development in technological talent cultivation and industry cooperation between Taiwan and Malaysia in the future.
Ng believes that Malaysian youth possess the advantages of multiculturalism and multilingualism. Besides proficiency in Chinese, they generally have strong English and Malay language skills, and many can also speak dialects like Cantonese. This makes them competitive in multinational corporations and the international job market, potentially becoming an important source of international talent for Taiwan's tech industry.
In recent years, with the increasing demand for talent in the semiconductor, high-tech, and biotechnology industries driven by AI, Taiwanese companies, in addition to participating in large-scale recruitment events, have extended their talent acquisition efforts to overseas campuses to proactively secure tech talent.
