(Washington, June 29, CNA, Reuters) Tech giant Apple Inc. announced today that due to AI significantly accelerating the development of malicious hacking tools, it has released a security update for users ahead of schedule, departing from its usual practice of bundling it with new iOS operating system releases, to prevent security vulnerabilities.
Reuters reported that this move is equivalent to Apple Inc. publicly admitting that hackers can use AI to launch attacks through known vulnerabilities in a shorter period.
According to Apple's past practice, unless cybersecurity experts discover hackers launching attacks targeting unknown software vulnerabilities, Apple typically only releases security updates when introducing a new version of the iOS operating system. During this period, developers and other testers would test the next update version to fix and resolve all potential vulnerabilities.
However, Apple pointed out that the latest round of security updates has been made available for all users to download ahead of the official release of iOS 26.6.
Apple also stated that although there is currently no evidence that the patched vulnerability has been exploited by hackers, the window period from the initial release of the security patch to its actual deployment to users' phones still needs to be shortened.
