(CNA website, June 30) Starting July 1, Taipei Metro will allow contactless entry using domestic and international credit cards, as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. iPhone users, after completing setup, will be able to tap their devices to enter and exit stations without unlocking or waking them. Can Android users also "tap to enter and exit the MRT without unlocking" like iPhone users? CNA has compiled information on the two current mobile-linked EasyCard modes for your understanding.

Samsung Wallet EasyCard is a built-in feature for some Samsung phones with NFC. It allows for direct contactless payment or top-ups within the app. A newly activated card has full EasyCard functionality, enabling contactless entry and exit at Taipei Metro without unlocking the screen or opening the app. The phone can still be used for limited contactless payments even when the battery is low. In addition to cash, credit card top-ups are also supported. Smartwatches are not supported.

Samsung Wallet EasyCard can be set up as a regular card, student card, or monthly pass. It is applicable to various public transportation (excluding High-Speed Rail) such as MRT, buses, and bicycles, as well as partner stores. It can be registered for personalized use, offering protection against loss and refund services for the balance.

Telecom EasyCard is a joint product issued by EasyCard and Chunghwa Telecom. It is considered a registered EasyCard. Android users with NFC-enabled phones can visit a Chunghwa Telecom store to replace their SIM card with an NFC-enabled one and install the Telecom Ticket Card in the Hami Pay mobile wallet to bind a brand-new EasyCard to their phone.

Telecom EasyCard only supports regular cards and is applicable to all public transportation and small-value purchases across Taiwan, with functions identical to a physical card. When using Telecom EasyCard to enter and exit Taipei Metro gates, no unlocking or app opening is required, and it can be used to purchase the NT$1200 monthly pass. It is important to note that the card cannot be used for contactless payment when the phone battery is depleted.

Both 4G or 5G mobile plans with NFC SIM cards and Android phones compatible with the NFC Hami Pay App can be used for contactless payments with the Telecom Ticket Card. In addition to cash top-ups, EasyCard, iPASS, and iCash2.0 cards can be set up for automatic top-ups linked to e-payment or bank accounts. The Hami Pay App also provides functions to check card balance and recent transaction history. (Editor: Cheng Yi-chun) 06/30/2024
