(Central News Agency, New York, July 1) - Victor Willis, the soul of the famous American group "Village People", has passed away at the age of 74. Willis co-wrote the classic hit "Y.M.C.A.", a song frequently used at rallies by U.S. President Trump, who posted a tribute on social media today.
The Associated Press reported that the "Village People" rose to fame in the late 1970s with hits like "Y.M.C.A.", "Macho Man", and "In the Navy". Their catchy lyrics and flamboyant stage personas were at the core of the Disco craze.
The group announced on their official Facebook page, "It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Willis, the lead singer of the Village People." The cause of death was "a short but rapidly progressing illness."
Trump posted a tribute today, stating that Willis enjoyed the band's song "Y.M.C.A." being played at his campaign rallies. Trump also said that just as on this day and during the July 4th Independence Day holiday, people will remember Victor Willis whenever the song is played.
"I extend my deepest condolences to his wonderful family and bandmates. We will miss Willis dearly."
Willis, along with producers Jacques Morali and business partner Henri Belolo, founded the "Village People" in 1977, inspired by an all-night gay nightclub in Manhattan's West Village. The group members, with their muscular physiques and rugged looks, portrayed characters such as a motorcycle rider, construction worker, police officer, cowboy, and Native American chief.
The group's self-titled debut album was released in 1977. In 1978, the group released two albums, including the hit song "Y.M.C.A.", which reached number 2 on the Billboard charts.
The music of the "Village People" is often heard at pool parties, dances, weddings, coming-of-age ceremonies, games, and any occasion that needs a boost of energy. Their songs have also been played at gay pride parades and the White House. (Compiled by Qu Hsiang-ping) 1150702
