Taipei, July 1 (CNA) Sports Minister Lee Yang personally refuted rumors today that he is planning to resign from his position, stating that he was "a bit taken aback" when he first heard the news last night. He emphasized that he has no current plans to resign and is focused on improving Taiwan's overall sports environment.
Lee Yang, who attended a review of the Sports Administration's budget for fiscal year 2025 by the Legislative Yuan's Education and Culture Committee, told reporters before the meeting that he received news of his supposed resignation last night and was "a bit taken aback at first." He personally clarified, "I have no such plans at the moment."
Lee Yang stated that the staff at the Sports Administration are excellent. He believes it would be best if he could serve his full term with the support of Premier Cho Jung-tai. He is currently focused on diligently completing each day's work and dedicating his attention to enhancing Taiwan's overall sports environment, while also doing his best to assist various sports associations and specific athletic groups.
Lin Hung-tao, chairman of the National Sports Training Center, recently resigned, citing "extremely heavy workload." It was also rumored that the primary reason for his resignation was discord with Lee Yang.
In response, Lee Yang clarified today that there is no discord between them. He mentioned that Lin Hung-tao had informed him in advance of his resignation and that he had attempted to persuade him to stay. "I am grateful for his tireless efforts and significant contributions to sports during his tenure as chairman. We will continue to seek his advice on his areas of expertise to improve Taiwan's sports environment."
The Sports Administration is actively preparing for the Nagoya Asian Games scheduled for September. Vice Minister Hung Chih-chang indicated that an estimated 482 athletes are expected to participate, comprising 240 male and 242 female athletes. The administration plans to provide maximum support to the coaching staff, with nearly 150 coaches designated to assist the athletes and serve as their best support system. Planning for relay stations and logistical teams is also underway. (Edited by Long Po-an) 0701
