(CNA Taipei, July 2) The Japan Coast Guard stated today that a Japanese survey ship, the "Koyo," was repeatedly ordered to stop its operations within Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approximately 80 kilometers north-northwest of Uotsuri Island (the main island of the Senkaku Islands) in Okinawa Prefecture. However, the survey ship continued its work. This marks the second consecutive day that the Chinese Coast Guard has demanded the Japanese survey ship cease its investigations within the EEZ.
Kyodo News reported on July 2 that the Japan Coast Guard said that around 3:20 PM on July 1, Taipei time, while the survey ship "Koyo" was conducting seabed surveys related to the continental shelf, a Chinese Coast Guard vessel broadcast a radio message demanding the survey ship leave the area. This situation continued until around 7:30 PM that evening.
The survey ship responded that the relevant investigations were legitimate activities conducted in accordance with international law and continued its operations.
The report stated that the Japanese government has lodged a protest with China through diplomatic channels.
The report also mentioned that the China Coast Guard had previously, on June 30, demanded another Japan Coast Guard survey ship, the "Takuyo," stop its investigation operations within Japan's EEZ. (Editor: Chen Kai-yu / Chiu Kuo-chiang) 1150702
