(CNA) Tech stocks weakened, and major U.S. stock indices closed lower on July 1. The Taiwan Stock Exchange index opened lower today, breaking below the 46,000-point mark, reaching a low of 45,981.89 points, down over 1,000 points. "King of Stocks" TSMC dropped NT$60 to NT$2,445.

Other large-cap stocks' early trading performance included Hon Hai down NT$3 to NT$238; MediaTek fell NT$135 at the open, later narrowing its losses to NT$85, trading at NT$4,250; Delta Electronics dropped NT$65 to NT$1,925.

The electronic stocks index fell 2.32%, the financial stocks index fell 0.41%, and the GreTai Securities Market Index, representing small and mid-cap stocks, fell 1.52%. (Editor: Yang Kai-hsiang) 0702
