(CNA) - There is significant public interest in whether Taiwan's stock market trading hours might be extended from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) stated today that extending trading hours is a major reform for the securities trading market with broad implications, significantly impacting securities industry professionals and investors. The FSC emphasized that it will not proceed with such a change before achieving social consensus.
Lin Hsiu-ming, Chairman of the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), stated yesterday at the Legislative Yuan that Taiwan's stock market trading hours are shorter compared to major international exchanges. The TWSE has been researching ways to extend trading hours, generally by about one to one and a half hours, potentially closing around 3:30 PM. He also noted that securities firms prefer a continuous trading session and are not inclined to adopt the midday break model used in Japan.
Shang Kuang-chi, Secretary-General of the FSC, explained the extension of trading hours at the FSC's regular press conference today. He mentioned that the international capital markets have undergone many recent changes, such as extending trading hours and shortening settlement times. The FSC continues to oversee the TWSE and the GreTai Securities Market (GTSM) in monitoring international developments, prudently collecting information on various countries' systems, and conducting ongoing analysis and evaluations.
Shang Kuang-chi stated that any change to market systems, such as extending Taiwan's stock market trading hours, constitutes a major trading reform for the securities trading market with wide-ranging implications. It is crucial for market development and has a significant impact on the securities industry, investors, and professionals. The FSC will not promote system changes before achieving social consensus in the short term. (Editor: Chang Chun-mao) 1150702
