(CNA Taipei, July 2) -- The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a high-temperature advisory for 10 counties and cities today, with Pingtung and Tainan warned of temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius. Weather expert Wu Der-rong stated that conditions will remain hot like midsummer until the 8th, and twin tropical systems at sea may become typhoons as early as today, with the Guam system having the potential to develop into a super typhoon.
The CWA issued a high-temperature advisory, indicating hot weather across the island. Pingtung County is under a red alert today, warning of continuous extreme high temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius. Tainan City is under an orange alert, with a chance of experiencing extreme high temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius.
Taipei City, New Taipei City, Kaohsiung City, Yilan County, and Hualien County are under orange alerts, warning of continuous high temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius. Changhua County, Yunlin County, and Chiayi County are under yellow alerts, cautioning against high temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius.
Wu Der-rong, an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University, stated in the "Heavenly Secrets Revealed Classroom" column of the Weather Application Promotion Foundation that the latest European model simulation shows that the Pacific high-pressure system will influence the region from today until the 8th, with sunny to cloudy skies and localized brief showers in mountainous areas in the afternoon. Starting today, the weather will be hot like midsummer, with the highest temperatures across Taiwan potentially reaching around 38 degrees Celsius, requiring attention to sun protection and heatstroke prevention.
Wu Der-rong said that the weather from the 9th to the 11th will depend on the typhoon's track and requires continued observation.
Wu Der-rong explained that the latest CWA track forecast map shows that the tropical depression east of Guam will develop into a tropical storm today and rapidly intensify into a severe typhoon, moving northwest. It is predicted to be in the far seas southeast of the Ryukyu Islands on the 7th.
Wu Der-rong pointed out that the latest international model simulations show that the Guam system will continue to move northwest after five days, gradually approaching the waters east of Taiwan, with the potential to strengthen into a typical "large and strong typhoon" of an El Niño year. However, the uncertainty in its track will gradually increase, and the threat level will vary significantly depending on different paths, requiring continuous observation and model adjustments.
Additionally, Wu Der-rong mentioned that CWA data shows that the tropical depression in the South China Sea will also develop into a tropical storm today, heading towards Hainan Island and the Guangdong area, posing no threat to Taiwan.
Regarding which system will be named the 9th typhoon, "Bavi," Wu Der-rong estimates that the tropical depression east of Guam has a higher chance. However, the naming of typhoons in the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea regions is still decided by the Japan Meteorological Agency. (Edited by Chang Ya-ching) 1150702
