(CNA reporter Wu Rui-chi Taoyuan, July 2) The Taoyuan City Police Bureau today announced the results of its second-quarter public security special operations. From April to June, over 14,000 criminal cases of various types were investigated, an increase of nearly 1,000 cases compared to the first quarter. Additionally, 12 organized crime groups were apprehended, 137 fraud rings were busted, and 1,963 individuals were arrested for drug offenses.
The Taoyuan City Police Bureau stated in a press release today that from April 1 to June 30, police carried out special operations targeting organized crime, illegal firearms, drug trafficking, and fraud. Focusing on gang dens, protection rackets, parasitic business locations, and prominent venues, they investigated 12 organized crime cases involving 59 individuals and seized 16 illegal firearms. Furthermore, 137 fraud rings involving 160 individuals were busted, with over NT$13.16 million in illicit gains confiscated. The police also arrested 21 suspects in a special operation targeting drug-related crimes and 546 individuals wanted for fraud.
Police statistics show that during the special operations period, 1,963 individuals were arrested for drug-related offenses and 679 for drug-impaired driving, with a total of 33,383 grams of various illicit drugs seized.
Taoyuan City Police Chief Liao Heng-yu stated that the police will continue to prioritize cracking down on organized crime, illegal firearms, drug trafficking, and fraud as key aspects of public security work. They will not show leniency towards criminal acts that endanger social order and oppress law-abiding citizens. In addition to strong enforcement to apprehend offenders, they will also trace illicit financial flows to dismantle criminal organizations at their source.
Liao Heng-yu reminded the public that etonitazene has been classified as a Schedule I narcotic drug since June 27. Manufacturing, transporting, or selling it can result in the death penalty or life imprisonment, and users are also subject to criminal liability. He urged the public not to test the law, as etonitazene, commonly known as "zombie smoke pods," is not a regular e-cigarette product, and anyone selling, supplying, or using it will be prosecuted according to the law.
