(CNA reporter Lin Chang-shun Taipei, July 2) In connection with the investigation into the "Anxin Coin Dealer" fraud case, prosecutors and police have discovered that several police officers allegedly accepted banquets and gifts and were involved in leaking information. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office yesterday requested the detention of a detective sergeant surnamed Li from the Tucheng Precinct of the New Taipei City Police Department and an intermediary surnamed Zheng. The Taipei District Court today ruled that both individuals be detained and barred from meeting visitors.
Last year, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office directed the New Taipei City Criminal Investigation Brigade to investigate the "Anxin Coin Dealer" virtual currency investment fraud case. During the investigation, it was discovered that some police officers accepted banquets and gifts of improper benefits, while other officers were suspected of leaking secrets that should have been kept confidential during the investigation. Upon learning of this, the Police Agency's Inspectorate Office established a special task force and reported to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for direction and investigation.
Prosecutors and police investigations revealed that in January of last year, during the investigation of the Anxin Coin Dealer case, police apprehended a suspect surnamed Wei, a member of the fraud group. To understand the progress of the investigation, the fraud group sought out a man surnamed Zheng, who had good connections with gangs and the police, to inquire about information. Zheng then contacted a police officer to inquire about Wei's statement and the progress of the investigation.
On June 30, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office directed the Police Agency's Inspectorate Office, the New Taipei City Police Department, the Taipei City Police Department, and the Criminal Investigation Bureau, among other units, to conduct 28 raids and summon the detective sergeant surnamed Li, 7 police officers, Zheng, and Wei, for a total of 12 people.
After further questioning, the prosecutor yesterday requested the detention and prohibition of visits for the detective sergeant surnamed Li and Zheng. The other 7 implicated police officers were each granted bail of NT$200,000, Wei was granted bail of NT$100,000, and 2 civilians were released. (Editor: Hsiao Po-wen) 1150702
