(CNA) Taipei, July 2 (CNA) Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), said today that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) should immediately "abolish its party platform on Taiwan independence." MAC Deputy Minister and Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh responded, "Whether the DPP wants to abandon its party platform on Taiwan independence, I think that's a matter for the political party."

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) held its regular press conference this afternoon, hosted by Liang Wen-chieh.

At the TAO's regular press conference this morning, Zhu Fenglian said, "If the DPP truly believes there is no Taiwan independence issue, it should immediately abolish its party platform on Taiwan independence, cease its separatist activities for Taiwan independence, recognize the 1992 Consensus that embodies the one-China principle, and improve cross-strait relations with practical actions."

Liang Wen-chieh stated this afternoon that the Republic of China is a sovereign state, and it and the People's Republic of China do not subordinate to each other. This is an objective fact, and it is the cross-strait status quo that must be defended. There is no so-called Taiwan independence issue, only the issue of being forcibly unified.

He said, "Whether the DPP wants to abandon its party platform on Taiwan independence, I think that's a matter for the political party."

Liang Wen-chieh retorted, the Chinese Communist Party claims to be a communist party, but does anyone still consider the other side a communist country now? "No, and we haven't asked you to change your name"; the Kuomintang's party charter mentions the Three Principles of the People and the Five-Power Constitution. Now, some people in the KMT are proposing to abolish the Control Yuan. If that happens, where will the Five-Power Constitution be? "We haven't asked the KMT to change its party charter either."

He reiterated that these words are meaningless. "The status quo as we understand it, the cross-strait status quo is that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China do not subordinate to each other. This is the status quo we must defend." (Editor: Feng Zhao) 1150702
