(CNA Washington, July 3 - By HOU Tzu-ying) Taiwan will establish the "Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Phoenix" in Phoenix, Arizona. The U.S. Department of State announced today that it welcomes this development, stating that Taiwan is one of the United States' most important trade and investment partners. Arizona also has significant investment from Taiwan, and the new office will further promote the deep economic relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) issued a press release on July 3, explaining that the decision to establish a new office in Phoenix was made in consideration of the new landscape of U.S.-Taiwan high-tech industry cooperation, the increasing number of Taiwanese businesses and expatriates in Arizona and surrounding areas, and the growing interaction between Taiwan and various U.S. states and local governments.
In response to an inquiry from CNA, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State responded via email on background, stating that the United States welcomes the opening of the "Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Phoenix."
The spokesperson added, "Taiwan is one of our most important trade and investment partners," and Arizona also has significant investment from Taiwan. The newly established office will further promote the long-term, deep, and continuously growing economic and people-to-people relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan, which also makes a significant contribution to American prosperity.
Amidst TSMC's expansion of its investment in Arizona, MOFA stated that Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, is an important and rapidly developing city in the southwestern United States. With the increasing investment by Taiwanese semiconductor and related supply chain companies in the area, Phoenix has gradually become a strategically significant and sizable technology industry cluster.
MOFA indicated that the future Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Phoenix will help strengthen ties between Taiwan and the governments of Arizona and Phoenix, respond promptly to investment and operational needs, and promote cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, technology, supply chains, culture and education, and people-to-people exchanges.
MOFA stated that preparations for the Phoenix office are currently underway.
In the future, Taiwan's number of representative offices in the United States will reach 14, including the existing offices in Washington D.C., New York, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Chicago, Honolulu, Denver, Miami, and Guam. (Editor: TANG Sheng-yang) 1150703
