(Central News Agency, reporter Li Hui-ting, Pingtung County, July 3) Pingtung police have been cracking down on drunk driving, with 17 individuals detained in just over a month. Among them, a 49-year-old man surnamed Su, a repeat offender, has been indicted by the Pingtung District Prosecutor's Office, which is seeking a one-year prison sentence.

The Pingtung District Prosecutor's Office announced in a press release today that from May 15 to July 2, they consecutively applied to the court for the detention of 17 individuals involved in DUI offenses with particularly egregious circumstances and a propensity for recidivism, all of which were granted.

Among these cases, the arrest of Mr. Su for DUI on the evening of June 11 was reviewed. The Pingtung District Prosecutor's Office considered that Mr. Su had been imprisoned for drug use and completed his sentence in August 2022. He intentionally re-offended within five years by driving under the influence of drugs, showing no signs of deterrence. He continued to drive after using drugs, disregarding his own safety and public safety. The case was investigated and indicted on June 29, with a request to the court to impose a heavier sentence according to the repeat offender regulations, specifically seeking a one-year prison term.

The Pingtung District Prosecutor's Office mentioned that among the cases investigated, some involved the currently prevalent new drug etomidate, and there were also instances of multiple drug combinations. As etomidate has been reclassified as a Schedule I narcotic, enforcement and investigation will be intensified. DUI offenses will be prosecuted swiftly and strictly to safeguard community safety and road security. (Editor: Chen Ren-hua) 1150703
