Taipei, Taiwan (CNA) - (Arlington, USA, July 3) - Egypt advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in its history today, defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a grueling 120 minutes of play ended in a 1-1 draw.
According to AFP, in the match held in Texas, Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute when midfielder Emam Ashour headed in a pass from a teammate.
Australia equalized 10 minutes into the second half when Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently scored an own goal from an opponent's free kick, marking his second own goal of the tournament.
Neither team had ever won a knockout stage match in the World Cup before, and both were eager to make history. Before the end of regulation 90 minutes, Egypt pressed aggressively but could not find the back of the net. The score remained tied through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout.
Australia's head coach, Tony Popovic, brought on experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan at the last moment before the shootout, hoping to increase their chances of winning.
Egypt converted all four of their penalties, ultimately eliminating Australia 4-2 in the shootout.
Egypt's next opponent in the Round of 16 will be the winner of the match between Argentina and the African powerhouse Cape Verde. (Compiled by Hsu Rui-cheng) 1150704
