(Central News Agency, Mexico City, July 3 - Reuters) Mexican authorities confirmed today that the remains found in the eastern region have been identified as those of journalist Roxana Guzman. Her kidnapping and murder once again highlight the dire situation for journalists in Mexico, a country long considered one of the most dangerous in the world for reporters.
Reuters reported that Guzman, head of the crime news website "Pulso Informativo del Sureste," was abducted from her home by several armed and masked men on June 2. Surveillance footage of the incident circulated widely on social media.
Local media reported that after killing Guzman, the perpetrators attempted to dissolve her body in a barrel filled with fuel. Authorities later found partial skeletal remains at the scene.
The Veracruz State Attorney General's Office issued a statement saying, "Forensic analysis confirmed the identity of the deceased... The remains found during the investigation belong to the journalist."
Authorities stated that eight people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in Guzman's kidnapping and murder, including four police officers from Ixhuatlan del Sureste, a town located about 300 kilometers south of Veracruz city.
Prosecutors indicated that these officers are suspected of providing resources, food, and logistical support to the criminal group involved.
According to the international human rights organization "Article 19," two other journalists have been killed this year in Mexico for work-related reasons. The organization also pointed out that since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, 10 journalists have been murdered, underscoring the severe environment for press freedom in Mexico.
