(Central News Agency Reporter Shen Pei-yao Taipei, July 4) Last year, commercially sold eggs were again found to have exceeded the pesticide residue limit for fipronil. After an investigation, Control Yuan members Tian Qiu-jin and others pointed out issues such as unclear division of responsibilities in the mobile control and handling process, and difficulty in recalling problematic eggs. The Ministry of Health and Welfare stated today that it will continue to strengthen horizontal linkages to maintain food safety.

Taiwan experienced the fipronil egg incident last year. Wen Ya Livestock Farm, in order to solve the problem of "chicken lice" parasites in laying hens, knowingly used fipronil, a pesticide and veterinary drug not permitted for use on laying hens, and mixed it with other pesticides such as Carbofuran, Cypermethrin, and Ivermectin, diluted and sprayed it in the chicken coops and cages. Over 50,000 eggs entered the market and could not be recalled.

After Control Yuan members Tian Qiu-jin, Zhang Ju-fang, and Cai Chong-yi initiated an investigation into this case, the Finance and Economic Committee of the Control Yuan recently passed the investigation report. Through a press release today, it pointed out that the unclear division of responsibilities in the mobile control and handling process for food safety incidents has led to problematic eggs entering the market and being difficult to recall. It requested the Executive Yuan to urge the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Changhua County Government to review and improve, and to strengthen the pesticide management system.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare explained in a written statement this evening that regarding the fipronil egg incident in November 114 (2025), the Food and Drug Administration of this ministry, together with the Ministry of Agriculture and various local government units, has jointly investigated the reasons for fipronil residue in eggs. In the future, it will continue to strengthen horizontal linkages and monitor the hygiene and safety of commercially sold eggs to maintain the food hygiene and safety of the public.
